Best Easter Candy on Shelves This Year

Posted by Martina Birk on Monday, September 23, 2024

The best Easter candy is fun, festive, looks great atop a pile of plastic grass—and you probably can’t get your hands on it all year long. New candy makes the Easter season fun and special. And that’s what we wanted to focus on for this taste test of the best Easter candies.
Yes, there are the perennial hits you can and should buy every year. Some of our favorites are Cadbury Mini Eggs, Cadbury Creme Eggs, Reese’s Eggs, and Starburst Jelly Beans—unimpeachable and delightful, every one. But what we’ve ranked here is all the fun, new Easter candy that’s on shelves this year. If a product on this list isn’t brand new, it was new to us and we’d never tried it in an Easter candy taste test before. So, while this list may not have the be all, end all best jelly beans and best chocolate Easter candy, you’re sure to find something new to toss in the ol’ Easter basket this year. Oh, and if you’re specifically in the market for the best chocolate bunny, we have you covered there, too.

Best for Grownups

Trader Joe’s Candy Coated Dark Chocolate Covered AlmondsTrader Joe’s

If you happen to be filling eggs for a grown-up Easter egg hunt or filling a basket for an adult and want something to put in it besides liquor minis, this is the best Easter candy to seek out. Trader Joe’s chocolate-covered almonds have a sophisticated flavor profile—the chocolate is pleasantly bitter, which is tempered by the candy shell—but they’re still whimsical as all get out. The matte, pastel shells are mottled like little robin eggs. They’re adorable and delicious. This is a great chocolate Easter candy for people who prefer dark to milk chocolate.

Lindt Lindor Neapolitan and Blueberries & Cream TrufflesTargetTarget

Every spring, Lindt comes out with a new truffle flavor or two, so even though these aren’t egg shaped or bunny shaped or cross shaped like this weird thing, we think they deserve a spot on our list of the best Easter candy. Because, wow, Lindt really nailed it with the new, springy flavors this year. The first is Neapolitan, which has a shell that tastes like a strawberry milkshake, and a creamy, marbled interior that perfectly blends vanilla and chocolate. No one flavor overpowers the others—you can really taste all three, like a perfect scoop of Neapolitan ice cream. These truffles are very sweet, but the blueberry flavor is compelling enough to keep you eating. Both of these are definitely for fans of white chocolate, though.

Best Jelly Beans

SweeTARTS Jelly BeansTarget

It took me a minute to decide if I love or hate these SweeTARTS Jelly Beans, but I landed on love. Do you really like tangy, sour candy? Then these are the best jelly beans for you. They are WEIRD. It really is like a SweeTART wrapped around a jelly bean center. They somehow channel that slightly chalky quality that disintegrates in your mouth without making them crunchy. The green bean is very tart—almost too sour for some people, I’d bet—but the others are pretty pleasant for everyone. This is a fun new candy Easter innovation, so if you’re looking for an alternative to the all-time best jelly beans (Starburst Jelly Beans), give these a shot.

Best M&M’s Runner-Up

Easter Sundae M&M’sTarget

As I said in my full review of Easter Sundae M&M’s, I don’t think they quite channel their intended flavor inspiration, but these new Easter M&M’s are still very tasty. They feature a layer of dark chocolate coated around a substantial white chocolate interior. And even though they’re described as simply “white & dark chocolate” on the front of the bag, the best part of the flavor profile is the kick of maraschino cherry. This is the best Easter candy for people who love chocolate-covered cherries.

Best Chocolate Egg

Moser Roth Crispy Hazelnut Finest Easter EggsInstacart

I actually groaned (a good groan) when I took a bite of one of these chocolate Easter eggs from Aldi. They’re unreal—creamy, light, crispy, and bursting with hazelnut flavor. The chocolate shell to creamy filling ratio is perfection, and the wafer bits in the creme add wonderful texture. If you’re in the market for chocolate eggs (and you happen to have an Aldi nearby), this is the best Easter candy to buy. (We also tried the creme-filled eggs Aldi is selling this year in little four-compartment egg cartons. They’re pretty good—eating the creme out of the egg with a little wooden spoon is certainly fun—but flavor-wise, they don’t hold a candle to the hazelnut eggs.)

Best of the Best

M&M’s Peanut Butter EggsAmazon

Peanut Butter M&M’s are elite (controversially, they’re our second favorite M&M’s variety), but if you’ve ever wished they were bigger and even more packed with peanut butter, I have very good news. M&M’s Peanut Butter Eggs are Peanut Butter M&M’s in an even more perfect form. They’re huge—they’re even bigger than Peanut M&M’s and at least twice the size of regular Peanut Butter M&M’s. That extra length and girth makes room for even more delicious, slightly salty peanut butter. These are amazing. And they come in cute springy colors. They’re the best Easter candy of them all, so stock up before they disappear.
